Dry Air:

Cold air tends to be dry, and indoor heating systems further reduce humidity. Dry air can irritate the respiratory passages, making children more susceptible to coughs.

Weakened Immune System:

Cold weather and reduced exposure to sunlight can contribute to a weakened immune system. This makes children more vulnerable to infections that cause coughing.

Environmental Irritants:

Winter often brings an increase in indoor air pollution due to factors such as the use of wood-burning stoves, candles, and other heating sources. Exposure to these irritants can trigger coughing in children.

Lack of Ventilation:

Closed windows and doors in winter can result in poor ventilation, allowing viruses to linger in indoor spaces and increasing the risk of transmission.

Seasonal Allergies:

Some children may experience allergies triggered by indoor allergens such as dust mites, mold, or pet dander, which can lead to coughing.

Respiratory Conditions:

Children with pre-existing respiratory conditions, such as asthma, may experience an exacerbation of symptoms in the winter due to cold air and increased exposure to respiratory viruses.

Natural Cough Remedies for Kids

These cough remedies for children will help to ease congestion and soothe sore throat, even if your child is too young to use cough medicines or you prefer a natural way of treating symptoms. However, it’s important to consult with a healthcare professional for advice tailored to your child’s specific situation; here are some natural cough remedies that are generally considered safe for kids:



Ensure your child stays well-hydrated. Offer water, clear soups, or warm herbal teas. Hydration helps smoothening of the throat and thinning of mucus.


Use a cool-mist humidifier in your child’s room to add moisture to the air. This can help relieve coughing by soothing irritated airways. Bacteria and fungi grow quickly in the water of a humidifier. So it is advised to change the water daily and clean the humidifier as per instructions given in the user manual to avoid any serious infection.

Saline Nasal Drops:

For infants and young children, saline nasal drops can help relieve nasal congestion and ease cough symptoms.


For children over the age of one, honey can be effective in soothing a cough. Mix a teaspoon of honey with warm water or herbal tea to increase the ayurvedic impact. Honey has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties helpful for smoothening sore throat. Note that honey given to kids under one year old causes infant botulism. So it should be avoided.

Elevating the Head:

Elevate your child’s head during sleep by placing an extra pillow or using a wedge pillow. This can help reduce coughing at night.

Steamy Shower:

Run a hot shower and let your child inhale the steam. This can help relieve congestion and cough symptoms.

Gargle with Saltwater:

For older children who can safely gargle, a saltwater gargle may help soothe a sore throat. Mix a teaspoon of salt in warm water. This gargling will help in smoothening of sore throat.


Ensure your child gets enough rest to support the body’s immune system in fighting off the infection causing the cough.

Avoid Irritants:

Keep your child away from tobacco smoke and other environmental irritants that can exacerbate cough symptoms.
